The Joint Replacement Center
About the specialty
Joint replacement surgery is a significant medical intervention primarily considered for patients experiencing severe joint pain and functional limitations due to advanced arthritis, extensive cartilage damage, or congenital abnormalities affecting joint anatomy and function. These conditions can severely impact an individual's quality of life, making daily activities and mobility challenging.
For both knee and hip replacements, the overarching goal is to alleviate pain, improve joint function, and enhance the patient's overall quality of life. Success in recovery and long-term outcomes heavily depends on the patient's commitment to physical therapy, adherence to post-surgery precautions, and regular follow-up care with their healthcare provider to monitor the progress and address any concerns.
Treatments
Total Knee Replacement
This procedure, also known as knee arthroplasty, involves the surgical removal and replacement of the worn surfaces of the knee joint. An incision is made to expose the knee joint, and the damaged ends of the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) are precisely cut to fit the new artificial components. The meniscus, a cartilaginous cushion between the femur and tibia, is also removed and replaced with a durable plastic to replicate the knee's natural movement and support. Special attention is given to ensure the artificial components' alignment and fit are optimal, allowing for smooth movement and stability of the knee in both flexion (bending) and extension (straightening). Recovery focuses on managing pain, preventing complications, and engaging in physical therapy to regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Early mobilization is encouraged to enhance circulation, minimize swelling, and promote tissue healing.
Total Hip Replacement
Total hip arthroplasty involves replacing the damaged hip joint with artificial components to relieve pain and restore function. The procedure can be performed through various surgical approaches, with the choice often depending on the surgeon's expertise and the patient's
specific anatomy and needs. The surgery entails removing the head and neck of the femur and resurfacing the acetabulum (hip socket) in the pelvis, replacing these with prosthetic components made of metal, ceramic, or plastic materials. An intraoperative X-ray ensures that these new components are correctly sized and positioned, aiming for a natural hip joint movement, and preventing dislocation. Post-operative care includes pain management, prevention of blood clots, and a comprehensive physical therapy program designed to strengthen the hip muscles, improve flexibility, and facilitate a safe return to daily activities.
