Kai Mithoefer, MD

About me

Dr. Mithoefer is double board certified in both Orthopedic surgery and Orthopedic sports medicine and specializes in state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgery of the knee and shoulder. He has more than 15 years of clinical expertise and is an internationally recognized specialist for sports medicine, joint preservation and regenerative orthopedics.


After completing medical school at Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany, Dr. Mithoefer received his residency training in Orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma at Harvard and the prestigious Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.


Dr. Mithoefer has extensive experience caring for athletes at all levels including as team physician of the New England Revolution, U.S. National Soccer Team, World Team Tennis, U.S. Davis Cup Team, and U.S. Open Tennis tournament, and has served as Assistant Medical Director for Major League Soccer (MLS). Having played sports at the elite and recreational level, he understands the athlete's mindset and practices with the primary goal of returning his patients safely and rapidly back to activity.


Dr. Mithoefer serves as an assistant professor of Orthopedics at Tufts University's School of Medicine and New England Baptist Hospital. He has published more than 100 scientific articles and book chapters and is a frequent speaker at national and international orthopedic conferences. He has been awarded Top Doctor for both Castle Connolly and Boston Magazine for many years.


Dr. Mithoefer’s profound clinical and scientific expertise in both surgical and nonsurgical regenerative Orthopedics allows him to offer a unique and highly individualized approach to functional joint restoration that incorporates the entire spectrum of regenerative musculoskeletal care.
