About me

Dr. Michael Baratz is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement. He holds an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University, a field that provided him with a strong foundation in medical innovation and technology. Dr. Baratz earned his Doctor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, recognizing his exceptional academic achievements. He completed the renowned Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, based out of Massachusetts General Hospital, and further specialized through the highly competitive Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina.


Dr. Baratz began his career at Tufts Medical Center, where he served as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He later joined the Harvard Medical School faculty as a Clinical Instructor of Orthopaedics and a surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and its affiliate hospitals. Dr. Baratz is directly involved with educating orthopaedic residents and fellows and is the founder of the BIDMC Hip and Knee Replacement Fellowship and remains the director of the program.


Dr. Baratz has more than ten years of experience in joint replacement surgery, including minimally invasive direct anterior hip replacement, partial and total knee replacement, and robotic assisted surgery. He is an expert in revision hip and knee surgery when prior joint replacements fail.

Dr. Baratz has an interest in global health and has performed more than 50 total joint replacements on medical missions in Nigeria as part of the GEANCO foundation and Panama as part of Operation Walk.


Dr. Baratz performs surgery at multiple locations in the greater Boston area, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centers in Milton and Boston, New England Baptist Hospital, and New England Baptist Surgical Center in Dedham. He is a member of several leading professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and the New England Orthopaedic Society (NEOS). He is also actively involved in advancing the field of orthopedics through his research contributions and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty.
